Mauna Loa Solar Observatory (MLSO)

MLSO acquires unique observations of the Sun’s atmosphere to support NCAR’s goal to address critical gaps in understanding the Sun-Earth system and to provide observations to reduce damage and disruption from space weather hazards.

MAUNA LOA OBSERVATORY HAS BEEN CLOSED since Nov 28, 2022 when Mauna Loa erupted. Road work will commence in January 2026 and be completed in March. MLSO will reopen within a month of road completion. See the Mauna Loa volcano eruption page.
